Puerto Rico - Part 6 - El Yunque National Forest

We got up at 7am on Thursday, which the kids were not happy about, but we were going to El Yunque National Forest, and I wanted to beat the crowds. We stopped by an Amigo grocery store to get pastries for breakfast and some sandwiches for lunch, then went to El Yunque, about 15 minutes away.

Several of the big trails were closed for repairs, so we went straight to Coca Falls trail, which looked like the best remaining hike. The falls were visible from the road, just around the corner from the trailhead.

We got one of the five parking spots at the trailhead and started our hike.

The trail is 1.8 miles each way, with steep hills, rocks, and streams to cross. It was very much a rainforest, with interesting plants and bird noises all around.

About halfway to the turnaround point we found a really cool double waterfall and pool area just off the trail, where we played for a while.

The trail ends at another stream crossing, where we took another break before heading back.

Our next stop was Yokahu Tower. We parked and ate our sandwiches and chips on a bench, then climbed the tower for a view of the area. It started raining while we were up there.

We stopped at a few rest areas looking for water, then went to our last trail of the day, Mt. Britton Trail. It was basically all uphill, leading to another tower with views of the forest.

Olivia wasn't feeling great and stopped partway up the trail and waited for us to come back. Carmen had some energy to burn, so she ran back down the trail.

We tried to stop at the visitors center on our way out, but they charged an admission fee to get in, so we skipped it. We stopped at a gift shop just outside the park, but again, no magnets (but we did get rained on again).

We went back to the Airbnb, the kids crashed and watched a show while Amber and I went to a local food truck park and ordered a bunch of different meals from different trucks, including mofongo. We waited by the beach until the food was ready.

This was probably the best meal of the trip. Lots of new things to try, and all of it was delicious.
