Puerto Rico - Part 3 - Pigeons, Catedral de San Juan Bautista, Castillo del Morro

We got empanadas for lunch at a place we found in the city and stopped in Plaza de Armas to eat them. There was a man feeding the pigeons there, and we soon noticed that he liked to throw grain at unsuspecting tourists to scare them. We enjoyed that for a while, then he invited Miles over and gave him some of the food.

Soon we were all in on the act, with pigeons climbing all over us.

We tipped the man for the entertainment and started on our way, but one stubborn pigeon stayed on Olivia until we were nearly out of the plaza.

Our next stop was the Catedral Basilica Menor de San Juan Bautista, the second-oldest (existing) cathedral in the Americas. It was not especially impressive by European standards, but it is the site of the tomb of Juan Ponce de León.

We walked from there to El Morro, where we got some ice cream from the same street vendor as yesterday before going inside.

The castle was very impressive, with multiple levels, giant walls, courtyards, rooms, and towers.

When we'd seen everything, we walked the three miles back to the Airbnb, then I went with Amber to the grocery store so she could buy ingredients to make a Puerto Rican dish called arroz con gandules, which we had for dinner.
