Olivia reading

A few months ago, Olivia decided she was going to read, and she's been unstoppable ever since. She loves to read books to herself, and just about everything else she sees that has words on it, too. I knew she was going to love reading once she finally got started, but I wasn't expecting her to pick it up quite so fast. Here she is today, about a month before her 5th birthday, reading a generic Little Mermaid book and the Friend magazine.

Flashback

I was organizing some pictures of Damon today and a couple of them reminded me of a little baby we used to have.

Shadow box

As I promised in my post from Thanksgiving, here is the report on my project to make a shadow box. As you may recall, this was going to keep me busy during my Thanksgiving break and was doing so until I was recruited to make Christmas tree advent calendars. My shadow box got put on hold and I ran out of break, so it sat like this for quite a while.

It got moved around from the living room to the bedroom and various tools and pieces of it are probably in the background of many pictures.

It sat for weeks at a time until I was able to simultaneously muster up enough time and energy to work on it a few Saturdays here and there. After a few trips to the craft store and hardware store and lots of time trying to figure out how to do it, I finally finished the back. A few weeks after that (today), I finally got around to hanging it on the wall. Behold the most expensive shadow box ever made.

The contents are an Indonesian dagger and sheath given to me by Court. The frame is hardwood, hand cut, hand glued, hand nailed, hand stained, and hand finished by my hands. Behold the fine miter joints.

The sides are lined with black foam board. The back is foam board covered with black fabric. The dagger and sheath are attached with clear wire. Metal fasteners attached around the edges on the back slide into the grooves I hand-routed into the inside edge to hold everything together.

It feels good to finally have it finished. And to have the final product be something I'm not embarrassed to hang on the wall.

Carmen's birthday party

A few days after her birthday, Amber put together a Monster Party for Carmen.  Our house was overrun with three-year-olds ready for some fun.

It was like herding cats, but we got them to play some monster-themed games, like a monster bean bag toss and make a monster (on the wall).

We stuffed them full of pizza, then had the birthday cupcakes.

And of course, everyone was interested in seeing the presents.

It was loosely controlled chaos, but from all reports everyone had a good time!

Amber's and Carmen's birthday

I'm woefully behind on this, but better late than never. Carmen turned 3 years old last month.

She was very excited to be 3 years old. The overwhelming favorite presents, as the pictures shows, were the dress-up clothes. She got several dresses and pairs of shoes and she and Olivia have played dress-up every day since then.

She got a few other things, like this doll, but I have to admit I posted this video mainly for Olivia's comment.

Amber of course had her birthday on the same day. Her big present this year is a new cookware set of her choice. A week or so after her birthday we went to Truluck's, a fancy restaurant downtown, to celebrate a raise, and afterwards we stopped off at the Macy's in the Galleria mall, where she laid eyes on this All-Clad set.

The lady at Macy's mentioned a great sale coming up, so I think she's waiting for that before making it her own.
