The Very Hungry Birthday Party

Now that Olivia is old enough to appreciate such things, Amber was excited to throw a themed birthday party for Olivia's 3rd birthday.  She came up with two ideas and presented them to Olivia.  Undoubtedly having no idea what was going on, she picked: The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

If you're not familiar with the book, it's about a caterpillar who hatches from an egg, eats lots of different kinds of food, then (SPOILER ALERT) turns into a beautiful butterfly.  Amber and Hyde engaged in a bit of quid pro quo to turn piano lessons into this amazing cake.

We invited a bunch of kids Olivia's age (cousins, neighbors, church kids) and they got to act out the story.  "In the light of the moon, a little egg lay on a leaf..."

The little eggs were white balloons, which the kids got to parachute with the "leaf" sheet until it hit the grass and popped.

"Out of the egg came a tiny, and very hungry caterpillar..."  The balloons all had a "caterpillar" hand puppet that Amber sewed.  The kids then got to go find one apple, two pears, etc. on a sheet across the lawn to feed it.

After all the fruits there is a section where caterpillar gorges himself, so we had the kids catapult plastic toy food into a "caterpillar" bucket.  Once the caterpillar was full, Amber's hand puppets had a lining that could be pulled out and warpped around to turn into a coccoon, then if you flip the whole thing inside out, it turns into a butterfly.  It's a pretty clever little creation, hopefully she'll blog about it.

Unfortunately, we picked the one hot and muggy day, so we decided to eat inside.  On the menu were all the foods the Very Hungry Caterpillar eats in the book, and it was a lot.

This was what fit on the table, and there was more food all over.

Olivia has been kind of fascinated by birthdays (her kitties often have birthdays) so she was thrilled to have Happy Birthday sung to her -- she giggled all the way through it -- and to blow out her candles.

And of course, she loved opening presents.

Overall I think it was a fun party.  Olivia seemed to really enjoy it, and she has become quite attached to some of her new toys, including her caterpillar.
